First Look at Alfama, Bringing Portuguese to Midtown East on Monday
In the summer of 2009,Alfamaleft Hudson Street after almost a decade, leaving Bobby Wehane ofdell’animato openSpassoin its place (speaking of dell’anima, yesterdayEater reportedthat they’re going after theBowery Wine Companyspace). Now Alfama rises again. Owners Miguel Jerónimo and Tarcisio Costa will open in midtown east (!) on Monday. As you can see in our slideshow, Alfama 2.0 is a bi-level space with a sleeker look thanks to leather banquettes and a backlit map of Portugal during its glory days. Chef Francisco Rosa’s menu (below) carries over classics like the caldo verde, mariscada, and cod gratin, and also introduces a section of “petiscos” (Portuguese tapas) such as pork trotters and rabbit meatballs. Once the liquor license comes in (hopefully in a week or so) there’ll be wine (including a good selection of ports and Madeiras) as well as seasonal cocktails. Alfama will open for dinner only, and about a week later hours will expand to 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m., and till midnight on Friday and Saturday.
